The art of handcrafting has a long history in India. The custom dates back to 5,000 BC, when handcrafted items were primarily employed for religious purposes. The Indus-Valley civilization, which existed around 3,000 BC, gave rise to a number of arts and crafts that may now be shown in museums.

Obviously, a specific craft or vocation required ability, aptitude, and competence that were developed through generations. It seldom ever left the family.

Then There was British
India's handicraft industry thrived during the medieval era and kept expanding, until the arrival of the British. After the British and other colonial powers arrived in India, the handicrafts sector found it difficult to compete on the international market. The handicrafts sector relied solely on one's manual dexterity, therefore producing something took time and effort. The price at which it was to be sold was thus likewise high. However, because British goods produced by machines were less expensive, individuals soon started to turn to the British market.
The fact that the raw materials used to create various goods were drawn from nature, hence they were not designed to survive for a long time, is another factor why the British took over the handicrafts industry. Therefore, the technique used to extend the lifespan of the produced goods was time-consuming and expensive.
Cottage industries were impacted by British rule in India both directly and indirectly. Directly, it contributed to the country's establishing peace and order, which had a negative impact on crafts such inlaying arms, weapons, and shields. This craft was widely practiced in Sindh and the Punjab. The British confined the sector to creating decorative trinkets for European visitors by removing the necessity for such weapons and outlawing their ownership and usage.
Similar to the foundation of British Rule, Indians were required to wear patent leather shoes whenever they were in the presence of British superiors, per an unwritten order. This led to the embroidered shoe industry's decline. Indirectly, the British occupation diminished the influence of the guilds, which controlled commerce and oversaw the caliber of labor. Evils like bad workmanship and adulteration of raw materials entered as a result, lowering the aesthetic and market worth of the items.
